GBVS is headed back to school! Per this year’s theme, “Back to School: Collegiate Traditions of Days Gone By”, we’re having a Homecoming Lawn Party Picnic! Bring the flag penant or varsity sweater of your favorite alma mater and show your school pride! We will have school themed games and activities, and a group photo on the lawn. Plus we are so pleased to welcome our “class band” the Stevedore Stompers! Some of you will know Tom Boates and John Clark from events like Gatsby on the Isles and the Wolverine Jazz Band!  For further info check out the Newport event page on Facebook and make sure to hit the “going” or “Insterested” so you get the updates on your feed.

The picnic will start around 12:30pm after we get back from the Belcourt Mansion tour and is open to all registered guests. There will be assorted lawn games like badminton and croquet and the setting couldn’t be more perfect with just the right amount of shade. Bring as many vintage props as you like: blankets, chairs, picnic baskets, college flair, etc. At 2pm, we will welcome the Stevedore Stompers with a Homecoming Parade march to show off our spectacular fashion! But wait, what the heck is a Stevedore…?? After some research, we learned it’s an old term for an dock worker, and the 1929 song of the same name is a tribute to them made famous by the great Duke Ellington!

Set up your blanket on the lawn and join us for dancing on the Founders Hall Veranda! The Founders Hall has a colossal wrap-around porch where the band will play. Admission also includes a begineer dance lesson at 1pm that will get you ready to “shake that thing”! The Lawn Party ends at 5pm, but is only part of our full weekend of activities.
