Memorial Day Weekend, May 24th – 26th 2019!
The Following info is for our 2019 event. 2020 info to be posted in the spring!
The Greater Boston Vintage Society invites you to celebrate the 1920’s – 40’s with its fourth annual “Newport Art Deco Weekend”! This event will take place at two 19th century estates owned by Salve Regina University. The Fairlawn Estate (aka Pell Center/Young Building) is our main event space/housing option. This beautiful estate was built in the 1850’s and used as a private home for most of its life until being converted for school and college use. With grand ballrooms and a vast lawn right on Bellevue Ave, it is the perfect place to experience life in the period. The estate is currently used to host conferences and a portion of it is a student dormitory. It is also home to the university’s Pell Center for International Relations and Public Policy.
We also have access to the nearby “Wallace Hall”. This hall was once an estate carriage house and then a gardener’s cottage. It is now also a dormitory for Salve Regina. It is a one-block walk from the activities at the Fairlawn Estate, but has intriguing features of it’s own and it is a quieter option for your stay. Rooms will be booked in Fairlawn first and then Wallace unless requested otherwise.
The weekend will consist of many period themed activities and classes. The theme of this year’s event will be “Travel of the Art Deco Age”! This theme will be part of our class lectures and activities throughout Saturday. There are classes in history, culture and dance of the Art Deco age. Plus the grounds of the estate make a stunning setting for the lawn party picnic lunch. Our dance studio sponsor this year is Rhode Island’s Swing Salon! Before the day is through, make sure to get yourself a ride in a 1928 Ford Phaeton! Saturday’s nighttime entertainment is the live-band Black-Tie Ball with the “Beantown Swing Orchestra! Alcoholic drinks will be for sale at affordable pricing. Sunday guests are invited to take a stroll around town and visit the mansions.
There are two main ticket options. For those wanting the most complete experience, a limited number rooms are available to stay for the entire weekend. See the Weekend Tickets link. These rooms are furnished dormitory style, but include linens and normal hotel amenities and feature a private bath. Price of this package is $275 per person for both nights and includes continental breakfast each day and all activities through Sunday afternoon. There is also a less expensive rate available ($250) for a few rooms that share a bathroom. Both options are an affordable alternative to booking a hotel room in Newport and it’s the only place where you can spend your entire weekend living in the art deco period! Tickets will go on sale Friday, March 22nd!
The second ticket option is for guests attending for just the day/evening on Saturday. See Day Tickets link. This price is $75 and includes all activities Saturday including the live-band Black Tie Ball. This year there will also be a second option for the dance only. This ticket option will go on sale Friday, March 29th. Check back for info.
We will have an amazing lineup of professional teachers and classes in store for the Saturday workshops! Click on the Schedule link above for more info.
