Memorial Day Weekend, May 26th -28th!
The Greater Boston Vintage Society invites you to celebrate the 1920’s – 40’s with its second annual “Newport Art Deco Weekend”! This event will take place at two 19th century estates owned by Salve Regina University. The amazing Fairlawn Estate (aka Pell Center/Young Building) is our main event space/housing option. This beautiful estate was built in the 1850’s and used as a private home for most of its life until being converted for school and college use. With grand ballrooms and a vast lawn right on Bellevue Ave, it is the perfect place to experience life in the period. The estate is currently used to host conferences and a portion of it is a student dormitory. It is also home to the university’s Pell Center for International Relations and Public Policy.
This year we also have access to the nearby “Wallace Hall”. This hall was once an estate carriage house and then a gardener’s cottage. It is now a dormitory for Salve Regina. It is a one-block walk from the activities at the Fairlawn Estate, but has intriguing features such as loft bedrooms with a spiral staircase! It also should be a quieter option at night.
The weekend will consist of many period themed activities and classes. Friday night, weekend guests can take part in the first ever “GBVS Murder Mystery Evening”! Saturday will consist of a series of workshops and classes. Dance classes this year are sponsored by Providences Swings dance studio! Later, we’ll take a trip into town for dinner and then return for a live band Black-Tie Ball with “Drew Nugent and the Midnight Society! Alcoholic drinks will be for sale at affordable pricing. Sunday, guests are invited to take day cruise of Newport aboard a period-style sailing yacht! (See website) Info for reserving tickets will be posted on the Facebook event page.
There are two main ticket options. For those wanting the most complete experience, a limited number rooms are available to stay for the entire weekend. See the Weekend Tickets link. These rooms are furnished dormitory style, but include linens and normal hotel amenities. Price of this package is $260 per person for both nights and includes continental breakfast each day and all activities through Sunday afternoon. There is also a less expensive rate available ($240) for rooms that share a bathroom. Both options are an affordable alternative to booking a hotel room in Newport and it’s the only place where you can spend your entire weekend living in the art deco period! Tickets will go on sale Friday, March 31th.
The second ticket option is for guests attending for just the day/evening on Saturday. See Day Tickets link. This price is $75 and includes all activities Saturday and the live-band Black Tie Ball. This ticket option will go on sale Friday, April 7th. Check back for info.
There is an amazing lineup of professional teachers and classes in store for the Saturday workshops! Click on the Schedule link above for more info. Other updates can be found on the Facebook Event Page!
