2023 Schedule

Event Theme: “The History and Influence of Black American Culture in Jazz and Swing”

Friday, June 16th

6-9pm:                 Arrival and Check-In (Register at Young Building aka Fairlawn Estate – 518 Bellevue Ave. Newport, RI)

8-9pm:                Lecture in the boardroom by Odysseus Bailer: “The cultural roots of Jazz music and dance”

9-11pm:               DJ dancing and dance instruction help in the ballroom.

~11pm:               We’ll close out the evening with a few silly games of “sardines” (reverse hide and seek).  This has been a Friday night tradition at Newport but this will be the first year we’ve played since Covid

Saturday, June 17th

8:30-10am:          Breakfast served (weekend guests only)

9-11am:               Registration for Day Guests (If arriving later, talk with a staff member to check in.)

10-11am:             Intro to Lindy Hop class with Odysseus Bailer and partner Maria Kakolowski.

11-12pm:            Lecture in the boardroom by Odysseus Bailer: “Let’s talk style… dance style that is!”

12 -1:30pm:         Picnic on the lawn, croquet and games provided (Bring your own lunch/accessories)

1:30pm:               Group picture on the lawn

2-3pm:                 Advanced Lindy Hop moves and experimentation by Odysseus Bailer and Maria Kakolowski

3-4pm:                 Lecture in the boardroom by Keith W. Stokes: “Gilded Age Newport in Color”

4-7:30pm:             Break time for dinner (feel free to order delivery and continue your picnic if you like!)

7:30-8:15pm:         Dance Instruction one-on-one, refresher class

8:30-11:30pm:      Black-Tie Ball in Fairlawn ballroom with “Taryn Newborne and the Real Deal”!

Sunday, June 18th 

8:30-10am:        Breakfast served (weekend guests only)

9-10:30am:       Check out: Please bring your key card to check out — however you can leave your car parked here and use the grounds for a picnic if desired.

10:45am:          Meet downtown Newport for sailing the harbor on the Adirondack II.  Click here to buy tickets!

~3:00pm:          Depart Newport, have a safe drive home!
