Welcome to Newport Jazz Age Weekend, a tribute to the music and fashion of the 1920’s-50’s! Hosted by the Greater Boston Vintage Society this event takes place at two 19th century estates owned by Salve Regina University.   The Fairlawn Estate (aka Pell Center/Young Building) is our main event space/housing option.  This beautiful estate was built in the 1850’s and used as a private home for most of its life until being converted for school and college use.  With grand ballrooms and a vast lawn right on Bellevue Ave, it is the perfect place to experience life in the period.  The estate is currently used to host conferences and a portion of it is a student dormitory.  It is also home to the university’s Pell Center for International Relations and Public Policy.

We also have access to the nearby “Wallace Hall”.  This hall was once an estate carriage house and then a gardener’s cottage.  It is now also a dormitory for Salve Regina.  It is a one-block walk from the activities at the Fairlawn estate, but has unique features of its own and it is a quieter option for your stay.  Rooms will be booked in Fairlawn first and then Wallace unless requested otherwise.

This year’s theme: “The History and Influence of Black American Culture in Jazz and Swing”

The weekend consists of many period-themed activities and classes.  In honor of Juneteenth (6/19), focus will be on the history of black influence to Jazz and Swing.  This theme will be part of our activities and class lectures throughout the weekend.  Starting Friday night, we will have a lecture on the roots of Jazz and swing by Odysseus Bailer of NYC.  On Saturday he will be also providing dance lessons in the Lindy Hop and a lecture in the styles of swing dance. Plus we have a talk by historian Keith Stokes on history of the Gilded Age. (This year’s event will have a strong focus on swing dance. This is the time for those who have feared learning 8-count lindy-hop to finally get their (2-left) feet wet!)

On Saturday the grounds of the estate make for a stunning setting for our lawn party picnic lunch.  Activities are posted on the schedule page and will be adding an impromptu group game for the picnic as well. We are very excited to announce that our band for Saturday’s Black-Tie Ball will be “Taryn Newborne and the Real Deal”! Taryn is a special treat for swing dancers and performs at many large dance events. She is very excited to be performing in the Fairlawn ballroom. This band will have you up on the floor all night!  On Sunday guests are welcome to join us for vintage sail on Newport harbor! Details can be found on the schedule page or Facebook event.

Registration Options

There are two main ticket options.  For those wanting the most complete experience, a limited number rooms are available to stay for the entire weekend.  See the Weekend Tickets link.  These rooms are furnished dormitory style, but include linens and normal hotel amenities featuring a private bath.  Price of this package is $320 per person for two nights which includes continental breakfast each day and all activities through Sunday afternoon.  This is an affordable alternative to booking a hotel in Newport and it’s the only place where you can spend your entire weekend living in the jazz age period!
