This year’s theme: “Classic Cinema of the Art Deco Period”

The Greater Boston Vintage Society invites you to celebrate the 1920’s – 40’s with its fourth annual “Newport Art Deco Weekend”!  This event will take place at two 19th century estates owned by Salve Regina University.   The Fairlawn Estate (aka Pell Center/Young Building) is our main event space/housing option.  This beautiful estate was built in the 1850’s and used as a private home for most of its life until being converted for school and college use.  With grand ballrooms and a vast lawn right on Bellevue Ave, it is the perfect place to experience life in the period.  The estate is currently used to host conferences and a portion of it is a student dormitory.  It is also home to the university’s Pell Center for International Relations and Public Policy.

NP 19 B BT BallWe also have access to the nearby “Wallace Hall”.  This hall was once an estate carriage house and then a gardener’s cottage.  It is now also a dormitory for Salve Regina.  It is a one-block walk from the activities at the Fairlawn Estate, but has intriguing features of it’s own and it is a quieter option for your stay.  Rooms will be booked in Fairlawn first and then Wallace unless requested otherwise.

The weekend will consist of many period themed activities and classes.  The theme of this year’s event will be “Classic Cinema of the Art Deco Age”!  This theme will be part of our activities and class lectures throughout the weekend.  Starting Friday night enjoy a pot-luck dinner followed by an original 1930’s feature film shown on an original theater quality period projector!  On Saturday there are classes in history, culture and dance of the Art Deco age.  Plus the grounds of the estate make a stunning setting for the lawn party picnic lunch.  Classes in period dance instruction will be from New York City’s Roddy Caravella and Gretchen Fenston.  Saturday’s nighttime entertainment the Black-Tie Ball will be headlined bu Micael Arenella and the Dreamland Orchestra Quintet.  This champion of NYC music will not disappoint!  Alcoholic drinks will be for sale at affordable pricing.  Sunday guests are invited to take a stroll around town and visit the mansions.
